The New York Islanders got their most important holiday shopping done early.
The Islanders went to Toys “R” Us Tuesday, picking out over 500 toys that they’ll hand deliver to kids in local Long Island and Brooklyn hospitals on Dec. 10.
“It’s such a satisfying feeling when you can visit the kids in the hospital and see their faces when they pick out the toys,” Kyle Okposo said.
It’s an early morning for the Islanders, who crash the door at 6:30 a.m. to buy the toys, but it’s also chance to take a trip down memory lane, or in Calvin de Haan’s case, drive down it.
“I’m a big fan of the Jeep power wheels, it’s a quality vehicle,” de Haan said after driving the mini car around the store.
Still, the Islanders know that their holiday work isn’t done until they bring the toys to the kids who need them most.
“The best part of doing this stuff is delivering the toys and seeing the smiles on the kids faces,” de Haan said. “It’s heartwarming, those kids are the true warriors and they really don’t take anything for granted.”
