HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER: YOUR STORY

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders
By Wendy Dierkes

Hi there!

My name is Wendy Dierkes and I am a goalie for a women’s hockey team here in St. Louis, MO. One month after my 25th birthday, I found out that I had stage 3A cervical cancer. I was in total shock. I didn't know what to say or do. I went through a round of chemo and radiation before my oncologist decided that I needed to have a radical hysterectomy.

I was single and didn't have kids, so it was the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my young life. After the surgery, I still had to do another round of chemo and radiation. But now, I am a healthy 32-year-old woman. I don't think I would have made it through it all without the love and support from my family and my boyfriend. I am now a big advocate for annual pap spears so that no other young woman has to go through the pain and heartache that I endured.
