Halak, Tavares Show Off Their Skills

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

John Tavares and Jaroslav Halak had a chance to show off their skills Saturday night, as the Islanders all-stars participated in the 2015 All-Star Skills Competition.

Tavares participated in the Draft Kings NHL Accuracy Shooting challenge, hitting his four targets in 26.122 seconds. Tavares was part of a Tri-State triangle, taking passes from Rangers forward Rick Nash and Devils mainstay Patrik Elias.

Tavares and Halak participated in the first heat of the Gatorade Skills Challenge Relay for Team Toews. Tavares was the designated passer, sending saucer passes across the width of the neutral zone into mini nets. Halak was responsible for the goalie goal segment of the relay, scoring twice from his crease - in four attempts - into opposing net to end the relay.

Halak and Tavares represented Team Toews in the Discover NHL Shootout. Halak stopped seven-of-nine shooters in the first round of the shootout, including Patrick Kane, Kevin Shattenkirk and Nick Foligno. Tavares scored on a Peter Forsberg deke, skating one direction, guiding the puck in with one hand on the opposite side.

Halak and Tavares’ shootout performance helped Team Toews close the points gap, but Team Foligno won the skills competition 25-19.
