by Cory Wright / New York Islanders

Thomas Greiss
is 1-0 for Germany at the IIHF World Championships, beating Belarus 5-2 on Friday afternoon.

Greiss, who joined the tournament late because of the Islanders’ playoff run, made 16 saves in the win, improving Germany to 2-0-1-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in five preliminary games. The win was Germany’s first over Belarus since 2007. Greiss had not played for Germany in IIHF or top-tier international competition since the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Brock Nelson and Team USA beat Hungary 5-1 on Friday morning, improving to 3-0-0-2. Nelson did not record a point in the win, his first game of the 2016 Worlds.

Greiss and Nelson face off on Sunday as Germany battles Team USA. Puck drop is at 9:15 a.m. and is on NBCSN.
