Islanders fall to Penguins, 2-1

NYI Recap: Islanders lose in shootout, 2-1

Anthony Beauvillier put the Islanders ahead in the 2nd, but they could not hold onto the lead and lost to the Penguins in a shootout, 2-1

  • 04:31 •

The New York Islanders picked up a point, but left one on the table on Monday night, falling 2-1 in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Anthony Beauvillier put the Islanders ahead 1-0 in the second period, but one goal was not enough despite a strong game from Robin Lehner (23 saves) and a solid, physical effort by the Isles. Derick Brassard scored the game-tying goal in the third period and Jake Guentzel scored the game-decider in the fifth round of the shootout.

"I thought we deserved more than one point," Beauvillier said. "I thought we did a great job tonight, especially against their top guys. We were physical, we were hungry on pucks. It's just frustrating."

Islanders Show Fight in 3-2 Win Over Red Wings

The Islanders rally out of 0-2 hole for comeback win in Detroit

by Cory Wright WrightsWay / New York Islanders

Barry Trotz wanted to see the Islanders play with more fight after Thursday's loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It took a high, hard hit on captain Anders Lee, but the Islanders showed the intensity the coach was looking for on Saturday, scrapping their way out of an 0-2 hole for a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

"It was a good character win for us," said Matt Martin, who scored the game-winning goal in the third period. "We needed to find a way to win tonight and it was a good response from a poor effort in Pittsburgh."

Game Recap: Penguins 6, Islanders 2

Three second period goals sink Isles in loss to Penguins

by Cory Wright WrightsWay / New York Islanders

The New York Islanders had an off night on Thursday and it resulted in a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena, their second straight regulation defeat.

Brock Nelson's shorthanded goal had the Islanders in a 1-1 tie in the first period, but the Penguins rattled off four straight scores, including three in the second period, to take control of the game. Anders Lee's teaming-leading 11th of the season made it 5-2 in the third, but that's as close as the Islanders came, as Sidney Crosby halted the comeback bid.

Game Recap: Jets 3, Islanders 1

Jets score two goals in 22 seconds to upend Islanders

by Cory Wright WrightsWay / New York Islanders

The New York Islanders liked a lot about their game on Tuesday night, but a 22-second span proved to be the difference in a 3-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

Leading 1-0 early in the third, the Isles gave up two goals in 22 seconds, including Adam Lowry's eventual winner at 3:39. Goals didn't come easy for either side and despite creating a bevy of chances throughout the night and limiting Winnipeg's, the Isles couldn't catch up to the Jets after they took off in the third.

Islanders fall in shootout, 2-1

NYI Recap: Islanders lose to Bruins in SO

Anders Lee opened the scoring in the 1st period and Robin Lehner made 35 saves, but the Islanders fell to the Bruins, 2-1 in a shootout

  • 04:07 •

The Isles picked up a valuable point in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden, a game that saw Robin Lehner and Tuukka Rask go save-for-save until Ryan Donato's game-deciding goal in the fourth round of the shootout.

As disappointing as it was to let the extra point slip away on Thursday, Head Coach Barry Trotz took an optimistic look at the point earned in a place they don't come easy.

"I'd take this game almost every night. It's a big point," Trotz said. "You never know if the point you get on the road, that may be the one that gets you to the promised land."
