The Islanders lost the season series opener to the Lightning 3-2 in a shootout, Dec. 17 at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders had a 2-0 lead with three minutes to go, but Valtteri Filppula scored twice – the second coming with four seconds left – to force overtime.  Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo scored for the Islanders while Evgeni Nabokov made 34 saves in regulation.

Valtteri Filppula - Forward

Valterri Filppula is second on the Bolts with 36 points (18g/18a) in 47 games, but has come alive over the past month, scoring 16 points (8g/8a) in 15 games. Filppula is trying to surpass his career high 66 points (23g/43a) he set in the 2011-12 season with the Detroit Red Wings. The Vantaa, Finland native was recently named to the Finnish Olympic roster at the upcoming Sochi games. He scored two goals against the Islanders in their only meeting this season.
