10:15: Islanders have an optional skate this morning, so we probably won't see a full group out on the ice. It's preseason, so Nashville is practicing at home right now. They'll fly in this afternoon, play and fly right back.
10:18: Very few guys missing from today's practice. Much higher attendance than the morning skates following those five-games-in-seven-days stretches.
10:20: Josh Bailey shoots on Evgeni Nabokov
10:25: Casey Cizikas gets ready to kick off a drill
10:28: Frans Nielsen
10:37: Jack Capuano just finished his availability. Some takeaways:
1. He's not worried about the lack of goal scoring. "We're getting it out of our system now."
2. Kyle Okposo, who took a hard hit into the boards in Brooklyn, was cleared to play this morning and should be on the ice for one of the Ottawa split-squad games on Sunday.
3. Though Kevin Poulin has been with the Coliseum practice group all week, Anders Nilsson has played well and is still in the mix for the No. 2 goaltender spot.
4. Evgeni Nabokov should play all 60 minutes tonight.
5. He's honing in on what could be the Islanders opening night roster.
10:58: Casey Cizikas, on if there's a lot of pressure internally for the team to break out of their preseason offensive rut:
"There could be, but right now we've had good chances and goalies have stoood on their heads. We were humming around the net the other night. We've just got to keep working hard. Hard work pays off with goal scoring. Hopefully we'll get rewarded."
11:03: Cizikas also added that it's a 200-foot effort up and down the ice that creates quality scoring opportunities:
"We have to keep committing ourselves to getting better. In our d-zone we have to make smarter plays. When we have the puck along the boards we have to chip it out. When we're in those areas around the blue line, we have to get the puck in deep and we can't be having turnovers because that will limit our scoring chances."
11:08: More from Capuano earlier:
On Michael Grabner:
"I think he's played real well. Not only has he had opportunities with the puck and gotten scoring chances but he's played real well defensively for us. The PK has been real good. He's had chemistry with (Frans) Nielsen in the past and we'll see tonight how that plays out."
11:12: Capuano, on if he likes the special teams units progress:
"It was a good week for us. We had some time to have our meetings and go through practice and spend quality time on it. When you break it all down, it really comes down to goaltending and special teams. It's going to be an integral part of our success. I thought it tailed off last year a little bit even though we were winning hockey games. It's definitely a point of emphasis and we'll continue to work on that as we go through this week and next week."
That does it for morning skate today. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Coliseum. We'll see you there. BUY TICKETS
