NYI power play goes 1-for-15 in loss in Trenton

The Islanders lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in Trenton tonight, 2-1. Unlike last night's win at the Coliseum over the Rangers, the Islanders' offense struggled throughout. Steve Stirling's team was 1-for-15 on the power play.

"Not our best effort," said Stirling after the game. "We had enough fresh legs in there that conditioning was definitely not a problem. The execution simply wasn't very good, especially on the power play."

Branko Radivojevic scored the game-winner at 5:57 of the third to break a 1-1 tie. The Flyers' Michal Handzus missed on an attempted wraparound, but the puck found its way to the crease and Radivojevic slid it past Garth Snow.

The Islanders' veteran netminder played the entire game and was excellent throughout, stopping 23 of 25 shots. "Snowy definitely kept us in it," said Stirling. The Islanders managed 24 shots on young Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki.

The Flyers also won the shootout, 2-1, on goals by Mike Richards and Simon Gagne. Mike York was successful for the Islanders, but Niittymaki stopped attempts by rookies Ryan O'Marra and Blake Comeau.

The Islanders practice on Thursday at Nassau Coliseum. They play the Bruins in Boston on Friday and in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday. They wrap up the weekend with an 8:00 pm game on Sunday against the Devils at the Meadowlands.

Game notes: The loss was the first for Isles' coach Steve Stirling in the preseason... Stirling has a record of 8-1 in the preseason...
