The Islanders [47-28-7] finished third in the Metropolitan Division standings, while the Capitals [45-26-11] finished second, claiming home-ice advantage. The series begins Wednesday with games one and two at Verizon Center, before shifting to Nassau Coliseum on Sunday for games three and four.
The Islanders and Capitals meet in the postseason for the first time since 1993, when the Islanders defeated the Capitals in six games.
The home team won all four meetings between the Metropolitan Division rivals this season. The Islanders edged twice in overtime, winning 3-2 on Thanksgiving Eve and 4-3 on Dec. 29. The Capitals scored a 5-2 win on Nov. 28 and won the most recent meeting 3-2 in a shootout on Feb. 21.
