Fans Flock To Get Tickets

by Rich Arleo / New York Islanders

After the Islanders selected John Tavares first overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, fans at the Draft Party at Nassau Coliseum rushed to the ticket sales table to lock up their seats for the 2009-10 season.

"It’s been a huge night in ticket sales,” said sales manager Anthony Noto. “We’re also expecting a big weekend coming up.”

Over the next 24 hours, fans spent more than $200,000 on tickets.

Fans who sign up for season tickets by July 7th will have an opportunity to meet with the newest member of the Islanders—John Tavares—in July.

“I just bought a Flex 20 plan,” first-time season ticker holder John from Selden said on Friday night. “This is my first season ticket package but I decided when we won the first pick, that if we drafted Tavares I would take the plunge.”

The general consensus with many fans attending the Draft Party was that they were waiting to hear Tavares’ name, and once that happened, the rush began.

“We knew that once the Islander’s picked Tavares we wanted to get season tickets,” said Marc Sausa of White Stone. “We absolutely needed a goal scorer and we got one in Tavares.

The excitement over the draft has even led people whose families had tickets in the past bring back the family tradition.

“My grandparents had season tickets from ‘72 until they moved out of New York in 1990 and I feel it’s time to bring the tradition back to the family,” John from Selden said. “I’ve been an Islanders fan for as long as I can remember. Usually at the Draft Party you can count how many people are here, I had to sit up in the 300’s to watch. I’ve never had to do that before—it’s amazing. I don’t ever remember it being like this before, it’s electric in here. I can’t wait see Tavares show everyone why he was picked first overall.”
