Star goalie says jerseys are designed for higher performance

Rick DiPietro had the opportunity to model one of the new Islanders uniforms on Wednesday afternoon and is eager to wear it for the upcoming season. Before the general public caught their first sight of the new fashionable jerseys on and in Thursday’s editions of Newsday, DiPietro became one of the first players to try it on, taking a few laps in the sweater around Islanders Iceworks.

“It looks great,” said the U.S. Olympian. “I like the whole look of it, especially the number in front. I’m excited about the new water-repellant material, which gives it higher performance. I’m excited to get into a game situation with them.”

The new jerseys were created to help the players stay cooler while carrying less weight due to the water-resistant design. The aerodynamically-designed jerseys breathe better than the old sweaters and soak up less water, keeping the uniforms closer to their original weight even after sweating in them throughout the game.

Fans can personalize the new jerseys with their own names and numbers or with Islanders players from the past or present.
