Michael Dal Colle and the top-seeded Oshawa Generals advanced to their first OHL Final since 1997, where they will face the Erie Otters and the projected first-overall pick in June’s NHL Draft, Connor McDavid.
Oshawa is coming off a six-game series win over the North Bay Battalion in the OHL’s Eastern Conference Finals. The Battalion proved to the Generals toughest opponent thus far, as Oshawa previously beat Peterborough and Niagara in five games, apiece.
Dal Colle was held pointless in the first three games, as North Bay took a 2-1 series lead, but the Islanders’ prospect racked up four points (one goal, three assists) as the Generals won three straight to take the series. Dal Colle has 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) in 16 OHL playoff games this season – placing him third in playoff scoring.
The Otters, Oshawa’s next opponent, stormed through the OHL’s Western bracket, going 12-3 in their first 15 playoff games. Oshawa and Dal Colle will have their hands full trying to contain the Otters first line, featuring three of the top five leading scorers in the OHL playoffs, including McDavid, who has 42 points (19 goals, 23 assists) in 15 games.
Buffalo Sabres’ prospect Nicholas Baptiste is currently fourth in scoring with 20 points (11 goals, nine assists). Draft-eligible winger Dylan Strome, the younger brother of Islander forward Ryan Strome rounds out the potent top line with 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists).
In two regular season games, both played in December, the Generals downed the Otters 4-1 and 5-1. However, Erie was missing McDavid, who was sidelined with an injury.
