The Islanders participate in their fair share of charity work throughout the NHL season. From hospital visits, to golf outings, to meet and greets with fans, the players are always eager to spend time in their community. When they step on the ice though, there are some others who pick up right where the boys leave off – the ladies.
On November 4, while the team was in Ottawa playing the Senators, a group of players’ wives and girlfriends made a trip into downtown New York City for the North Shore Animal League
America’s (NSALA) 5th Annual DogCatemy Celebrity Gala. Cassandra DiPietro, one of NSALA’s biggest supporters and wife of Islanders’ goaltender Rick DiPietro
, rounded up some of her friends to help the Port Washington-based charity.
Allison Weight, Alicia Moulson, Teri Hunter, Nicole Wisniewski, Lacey Cadle (Blake Comeau’s fiancée) and Moa Sjolander (Frans Nielsen
’s girlfriend) all joined DiPietro and several hundred guests, some with their pets, to pay tribute and to raise awareness of the plights of homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.
Other celebrities in attendance included actress Sandra Bernhard, multi-platinum recording artist Deborah Cox, actor Steven Baldwin and Joseph R. Gannascoli of The Sopranos fame. Attendees were treated to celebrity pet videos that were awarded in the following categories: Best Dogumentary, Best Pawformance, Best Tail-Waggin’ Film, Best Reel Life Tail and Best in Show. The DiPietro’s won Best Dogumentary in 2009 and this year, Cassandra actually presented an award.
After taking in a Deborah Cox performance and the award ceremony, the ladies made their way to the silent auction tables where they won numerous prizes for charity; between the seven of them, their haul included oversized doggy pillows, dog beds, books and even specially-designed pet speakers.
One very special online auction to benefit NSALA includes a very special evening at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Cassandra and Rick are auctioning off four tickets to Wednesday night’s game against the Lightning along with the opportunity to meet Rick and the rest of the team.
