, while following general New York Islanders news on its periphery.
Compared to other Blog Box members, Ken Dick takes a starkly different approach to blogging. “Okposo.net” serves as a source for all things
Dick had the idea for his blog after the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, when Okposo was selected by the Islanders in the first round.
“I was really looking for a transformational player, who could really change the face of the team,” said Dick. “When Kyle was drafted, I started following his stats at the University of Minnesota, and I thought he had a really good chance of being a really good prospect.”
Okposo.net was Dick’s first experience as a blogger, and it quickly gained him the opportunity to join the Islanders’ inaugural Blog Box in 2008. He has been involved with the Blog Box in every year of its existence.
“I’ve been here since the beginning, and it’s an honor,” said Dick. “I’m still energetic about the program.”
Although the blog maintains its focus on the development of Okposo, Dick has found ways to seamlessly transition from a player-centric blog, to one that more broadly focuses on the Islanders.
“I found, when there had been times when he’s hurt, I needed to broaden the subject matter a bit,” said Dick. “I’ve been fortunate that guys like Tavares came in, and we’ve got some other exciting players. I follow the team, but if Kyle does something exceptional, I’ll write an article on that.”
In addition to maintaining Okposo.net, Dick is an admitted baseball junkie and avid fan of Japanese baseball. He often contributes news and analysis to NPBTracker.com, a site that follows Japan’s highest professional baseball league. A true jack-of-all-trades, Dick also has interests in aviation and photography. He also considers himself a history buff, his undergraduate major at Emory University.
During the past four seasons, Dick has relished his opportunity to be so closely involved with the team. The access has helped developed his blog, and he has shared the benefits with his readers.
It’s kind of every fan’s dream to have the access we have. I think it’s great that I can go to Iceworks or the Coliseum to get a quote from Kyle. It’s great to be one of the first people to know what’s going on with the team as things happen. - Ken Dick

Of the many perks afforded the Blog Box members, Dick most appreciates the opportunity to interact with the players in the locker room. He has developed working relationships with Okposo and a number of other players, and enjoys how candid they have been.
“You get to look into their personalities,” said Dick. “They let their guard down just a little bit – not too much – when we’re around. That’s fun for me to see how they interact with each other.”
Dick has no grandiose future plans for his blog, and is content with its current structure. His short term goal is to increase his readership, but long-term, he simply wants people to become Kyle Okposo
“I want people to follow Kyle now, but I also want to build up a loyal readership so people know what he’s doing five years from now down the road,” said Dick.
Now that Okposo has returned to the line up from a shoulder injury, that should be no problem.
