Community Stars of the Week: June 7, 2020

Community Hero: Donald RosnerRosner has fed over 3,000 front line workers, as well as nursing homes and raised money for a high school band
The timing couldn't have been worse for Donald Rosner to open Blue Line Deli and Bagels, but the bagel purveyor has proved that it's always the right time to support the community.

Rosner opened his Islanders-themed deli in Huntington on March 11, one day before NHL paused its season. Shortly after that, New York State was put on pause, with all non-essential businesses being forced to close, and restaurants being limited to take-out and delivery options only.

If Rosner wanted to gripe about his luck, it'd be warranted, but instead, he used his position for the good of the community and Long Islanders. He looked at what he had, which was plenty of food, and started sending it directly to front line workers in hospitals, thanking them for working long hours and putting themselves in harm's way. To date, Rosner has fed over 3,000 front line workers and makes weekly deliveries to nursing homes and students to feed those in need.
He isn't just providing food either. With toilet paper, water and paper towels flying off the shelves in grocery stores, Rosner utilized his connection to commercial suppliers, ordering essentials and selling them at cost.

Donating food and selling supplies at cost aren't profitable endeavors - but that hasn't stopped Rosner from donating money either. Blue Line started a fundraiser for the Walt Whitman High School band, donating 20% of his proceeds during a "Dine and Dash" event.
He's a die-hard Isles fan on top of it all, even offering a free bagel with cream cheese to anyone who walked in his store on May 28 and yelled "Let's Go Islanders!"
Rosner didn't do any of this for the attention, though he's rightfully getting a lot for his community work. Of the 50 community hero submissions we received this week, 34 wrote in for Rosner.
He wrote one in as well, and nominated someone else.

Community Hero: Tim NimalNimal is an FDNY EMT who has responded to calls every day during the COVID-19 pandemic
Timothy Nimal is a frontline worker whose front line changes every day. Nimal is an FDNY EMT in Queens, who has worked every day since the COVID-19 pandemic started. He's constantly on the move, responding to COVID-19 calls and risking exposure daily, all to help those in need.
He's worried about getting sick, or getting his friends and family sick by bringing the coronavirus home, but he hasn't let that fear stop him from providing care. According to friends, Nimal, a life-long Islanders fan, treats every patient like a member of his own family and does whatever he can to help them get healthy and recover.
In addition to being an EMT, Nimal is a volunteer firefighter in Wantagh and has served in the United States Marine Corps. He's dedicated his life to serving our country and community!

Community Hero: Arisledy GreenArisledy is an EMS dispatcher working long hours due to COVID-19
Arisledy Green works as an EMS dispatcher for Hunter Ambulance who has working overtime each week to help safely transport patients affected by COVID-19. She works long hours on top of being a mom and teaching her five-year-old daughter with whatever spare time she has.
