Everyone who has enjoyed Islanders hockey at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum has memories of special games, special times, and special moments.
The moments have spanned decades. One generation has Stanley Cup clinchers, Mike Bossy’s 50-in-50 and Ken Morrow’s mastery over the Rangers, while the younger generation has Shawn Bates' penalty shot, John Tavares’ OT heroics, and Yes! Yes! Yes! Over 43 years, lifelong memories were made at the Old Barn on Hempstead Turnpike.
Eric Hornick, the long-time Islanders’ statistician has commemorated “It Happened at the Coliseum” moments every day since October in “The Skinny” and in blog posts on http://nyiskinny.com.
“Over the years, I have received many comments about features that looked back at a date in Islander history,” Hornick said. “To honor the final season at the Coliseum, I created this special item to look back – day by day– at the most memorable games played in the building’s history.”
Now, fans can own a piece of the history with T-Shirts and Hoodies that have been developed using the “It Happened at the Coliseum” theme.
And here’s the best part – all of the proceeds are going to Make-A-Wish® Metro New York.
The shirts were developed in association with IslesBlog (http://nyislesblog.com). “We wanted to create a design that evoked nostalgia and pride,” IslesBlog contributor Joe Buono said. “It’s bittersweet to see the Islanders leave Long Island, but heartwarming that such good has come from it.”
Hornick has worked on Islander telecasts for the past 33 years, with his usual seat being about six feet to Howie Rose's left.
“This project has been a labor of love that has led to something really special, making it all worthwhile. It has made my wish, being able to help these wonderful children, come true,” added Hornick.
To date, the shirts have raised over $15,000 for Make-A-Wish.
Shirts are priced at $24, Kids Tees $20 and Hoodies are $35.
