Islanders 3, Rangers 2

A two-goal effort by Miro Satan led the Islanders to a 3-2 over the archrival Rangers Tuesday in New York City.

Following some up and down play and a solid penalty kill by the Rangers to start the first period, the Islanders got on the board early thanks to Miro Satan. Sean Bergenheim got the play started by knocking a shot on Kevin Weekes while being upended in the right circle. Wyatt Smith jumped up to put the rebound off Weekes, but the puck was found by Satan, who spun and fired it off the goalie and into the net. The Rangers responded with some fisticuffs by Colton Orr, but John Erskine put him off balance and on the ice with a pair of solid blows.

Again, the Islanders struck early in the second period, as Chris Campoli made plays on both ends of the ice on the same shift. After stripping the puck away in his own end of the ice, he followed the play up ice and tapped home a rebound off Jason Blake's point slapshot.

On the powerplay, Satan beat Weekes again, this time with a hard wrister from the slot. Satan slid the puck to Radek Martinek at the point, before taking it back and cutting across the zone to set up his stick-side goal.

In the third, the Rangers finally hung a goal on Rick DiPietro, as some crease confusion left an open Islanders net. Jaromir Jagr flung the puck out in front from the corner, and hit Radek Martinek's stick. DiPietro followed the direction of the shot, but the puck bounced off Martinek in the opposite direction. Michael Nylander was waiting in front of the net to deposit the gift.

A 5-on-3 Blueshirts powerplay just over halfway into the third let the Rangers pull within a goal. Working the puck around the outside of the Isles' zone opened up the left post of DiPietro's net, where Petr Prucha was parked to hammer it in.

OFF THE ICE: The Rangers scratched Henrik Lundqvist (hip), Steve Rucchin (foot), Darius Kasparaitis (groin), Martin Rucinsky (finger), Tom Poti (upper body), Marek Malik (upper body), while the Islanders sat Petteri Nokelainen (knee), Arron Asham (ankle), Joel Bouchard (knee), Eric Godard (concussion) and Alexei Zhitnik (ankle)... All-time, the Rangers have a 94-86-19-1 lead over the Isles... After the final game of the eight-game season series, the Rangers took a 5-3 win.
