The youngest of the Islanders Blog Box members, Christian Arnold began his “Islanders Hockey Blog” in March 2008. The site started as a hobby, a fun way to fill his spare time. Since then, he has gained access to the Islanders locker room, press box, and a wealth of experience valuable to a budding journalist.
“It’s just a surreal experience,” said Arnold. “To come so far from sitting in the stands to being in the locker room postgame and talking with players and coaches, it’s something I never dreamt possible.”
An Islanders fan since his childhood, Arnold followed his father’s love of the team. He attended his first game in 1998 against the Florida Panthers, and his passion has only grown.
“The first time I walked into the locker room, I walked down the hall with all the plaques of Bossy, Gillies, Nystrom, and all those guys, and I remember that I couldn’t believe where I was standing,” said Arnold.
Now a freshman journalism student at CW Post, Arnold became interested in blogging during high school.
“I used to read a lot of blogs, so I just thought to myself, ‘If these guys can do it, then I can do it,’” said Arnold. “One day I just started it up as a fun little thing, never thinking it would go to these sorts of extremes.”
Islanders Hockey Blog is full of information for fans, ranging from pre- and postgame interviews, game recaps, rumors, and features. Arnold feels it’s important to be casual with the readers, presenting them with information they could not obtain without access to the team.
“We try and give you the best perspective of the team, the best inside information we can, and sort of have fun with it too,” said Arnold. “There’s no set style. I’ll try to get information to the fans that you’re not going to read in the newspaper or on another site. I want to give them that inside peek I’ve been fortunate to see these past couple of months.”
Although the site is not even three years old, it has become successful far faster than Arnold had envisioned.
“I never thought it would get to the point of where it is now,” said Arnold. “I don’t know how much further it can go. I have been fortunate enough to cover a lot and see so much, the sky’s the limit for me. You never know where things can go from here.”
Walking into the locker room, and there’s Pierre McGuire, a guy you see on NBC and TSN, and he’s standing five feet in front of you. The opportunity to talk to them and meet the players is one of the coolest things I’ve done in a long time. - Christian Arnold
In addition to meeting and speaking with current Islanders, the aspiring journalist has cherished his encounters with media members as well.
“Walking into the locker room, and there’s Pierre McGuire, a guy you see on NBC and TSN, and he’s standing five feet in front of you” said Arnold. “The opportunity to talk to them and meet the players is one of the coolest things I’ve done in a long time. It’s a great experience to have this sort of access and take my site to the next level and push my own career as well.”
Arnold’s blog has had an accelerated path to success, a notion not lost on the college freshman.
“Just being (at the arena) and being able to do what I’ve done over the past couple of months, it’s been a dream come true really.”
