Josh Bailey is about to get a new linemate.
The Islanders winger and his wife are expecting the birth of their first child later this summer, a personal milestone. Now back on Long Island preparing for the baby, NewYorkIslanders.com caught up with Bailey to talk about future Bailey, offseason training and the Islanders' new players.
NYI: So what have you been up to this summer?
JB: My wife and I were in two weddings, so all that entails being in weddings. It was a lot of fun and they were both great days. We had Travis’ wedding out in Winnipeg. It was quick, we were only home for two months and now we’re back here getting ready to have our first child. We’re just getting ready and looking forward to that.
NYI: Congratulations. Is it a boy or a girl?
JB: It’s a boy.
NYI: Parenthood is a big milestone. What’s the feeling like? Excited? Nervous?
JB: We’re pumped. It’s our first and the first grandchild on both sides, so I think both of our families are pretty excited and they’ll both be coming down as soon as he’s born. We’re just looking forward to being parents, we’re ready for it and we can’t wait.
NYI: Future hockey player?
JB: I was happy to have the first one be a boy. There’s been a lot of girls on the team here with the guys having girls and they’re great – I’d like to have a girl at some point, too – but for the first one to be a boy is nice and I’m sure it’ll be special.
NYI: Do you have a name picked out?
JB: We have the name narrowed down to a couple, but we haven’t closed anything off. We are going to wait and see when he comes and decide then. We’ve been stuck on a couple for a while, so I’m sure it’ll be one of those.
NYI: How’s the summer training going?
JB: I’ve been with the same trainer for a while now back home, I train out of Whitby, ON and it’s good. We had to change it up a bit with coming back here halfway, so I’ll join our training staff here, start skating here in no time and start ramping things back up.
NYI: The team added some new players in Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera and one returning player in PA Parenteau. What are your thoughts on the new guys and are you excited to welcome back PA?
JB: PA’s a great player and a great guy. I think he’ll be a great fit for our team. It was a spot we needed to fill and to bring in a veteran guy like him who’s been around a long time and a proven player in the league is always good.
Same with the other two guys, I’ve heard nothing but good things about both of them. I don’t personally know them, but know guys that know them and it’s all positive.
I haven’t seen too much of Ladd, but we’ve seen a lot of Chimera, obviously playing in the playoffs and a divisional rival. He’s always a tough guy to play against, but those are the guys you want to have on your team.
