Bridgeport Sound Tigers Notes

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers went 0-2-0-1 last week, earning a point in a shootout Dec. 1 vs. the Worcester Sharks, but losing in regulation at the Hershey Bears on Nov. 30 and vs. the Norfolk Admirals on Dec. 2. At 10-9-0-1 (21 points), the Sound Tigers are in second place in the Northeast Division, trailing the Springfield Falcons by seven points.

The Sound Tigers have three games this week, starting with a road tilt against the Connecticut Whale on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m. Bridgeport is 2-1-0-0 against its in-state rival this season, overcoming a two-goal deficit in each win.

The team plays on the road again Saturday, Dec. 8 at 5:00 p.m. in its first matchup of 2012-13 against the Albany Devils. The Sound Tigers went 4-2-0-0 against the New Jersey Devils’ minor league affiliate last season.

The Sound Tigers have a quick turnaround before a 3:00 p.m. home game on Sunday, Dec. 9 against the Syracuse Crunch. Bridgeport won both games against the Crunch last season, and will not play them again this season until April.

Left wing Nino Niederreiter leads the team in goals (10) and points (20), and co-leads the squad in assists (10) and power play goals (three). Niederreiter’s goal and assist in the third period on Dec. 1 vs. Worcester forced overtime, earning Bridgeport a point in the standings.

Center Brock Nelson is tied for fourth among league rookies with nine goals and fifth among first-year players with 16 points. The Warroad, MN native has goals in his last two games, including a power play marker with less than three minutes remaining to force overtime in the Dec. 1 contest vs. Worcester.

Right wing Colin McDonald is riding a three-game assist streak (four assists) and is tied for third on the team with nine helpers this season.

The Sound Tigers rank second in the league in power play efficiency, scoring on 21-of-92 man advantages this season (22.8%), including a 25.0% success rate at home.

The Sound Tigers co-lead the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch with 516 penalty minutes, an average of 25.8 per game. Bridgeport held its opponents off the board in 17-of-19 penalty kill situations in three games last week. Brett Gallant (97 PIMs, 1st AHL) and Nathan McIver (78 PIMs, 10th AHL) lead the team in penalty minutes.
