Zdeno Chara wristed a shot through Rick DiPietro's five-hole in the ninth round of a shootout for a 4-3 Boston Bruins win over the Islanders Saturday night at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Tim Thomas made 31 saves for the victory, while DiPietro came up just short stopping 25 shots in regulation and overtime.

Viktor Kozlov opened the scoring after deflecting Chris Campoli's floater past Thomas for his 20th of the season, 3:52 into the first period.

The Islanders made a number of costly turnovers in their own zone before Marco Sturm evened the score with a blast from the point past DiPietro with 7:14 gone by in the first period.

Patrice Bergeron gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead on the power play by scoring from the side of the net with 8:56 remaining in the first period.

Just 54 seconds into the second period, Mike Sillinger picked up his 18th goal of the season to even the score at two. Andy Hilbert's wraparound was stopped by Thomas, but Sillinger buried the rebound, with an assist also going to Campoli.

The Islanders regained the lead at 3:58 of the third period. Jason Blake created traffic in front of the net for Tom Poti's point shot, and Miroslav Satan finished the play on the backhand for his 19th goal of the season.

Sturm scored his second of the game off a one-timer from a sharp angle to tie the score at three while on a 5-on-3 power with 8:15 left in the third period.

In the shootout, Kozlov and Bergeron traded goals in the opening rounds. The Islanders had a chance to win the game in the seventh round after Randy Robitaille's wrist shot got past Thomas, but Petr Tenkrat countered on the backhand.

After Poti's backhand went off the post, Chara scored with a low wrist shot after faking a slapshot.
