BLOG BOX: Dee Karl - Carpe Vino!

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

Come meet hockey legends Clark Gillies and Pat LaFontaine on Wednesday, April 2nd at Stew Leonard’s Wines of Farmingdale, as they help launch the new NHL Alumni Signature Wine Series and support the charities these Islander greats have founded.

The NHL Alumni Association has teamed up with California winemakers Ironstone Vineyards and Artemis Sports group to create a unique collection of beautifully labeled wines that give back with every bottle purchased. Ironstone Vineyards, a state-of-the-art wine production facility set in the land of the California gold rush and built in the style of a 19th-Century gold stamp mill, is producing both Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, and gracing them with gold labels featuring twelve of hockey’s greatest players from six different NHL teams.

Each gold relief label has the player’s likeness, as well as their number and signature. These unique wines would be a welcome addition to any hockey fan’s collection or dinner table. Purchase a bottle of Pat LaFontaine’s 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, with its dark cherry and toasted oak aroma, and a donation will be made to his Champions In Courage foundation to help support children and families recovering from life-threatening illness.

If it’s white you prefer, pick up a bottle of Clark Gillies’ 2007 Chardonnay, and a donation will be made to the Clark Gillies Foundation for children in the Tri-State area who are physically and/or financially handicapped.

Ironstone’s 2005 Cabernet was rated 85 points by Wine Enthusiast and listed as a Best Buy. Their Chardonnay was featured on Every Day with Rachel Ray this past August. As these Signature Series wines are all limited editions, they are sure to go fast.

So stop by Stew Leonard’s, where they are being offered at the special price of $14.99 per bottle or two for $25. Since wine improves with age, stocking up for gift giving to your Islander-hockey-loving friends and family isn’t a bad idea. If you can’t get to the store, check out www.alumniwineseries.com for additional information on all available wines and ordering instructions.

The Wine Tasting and Bottle Signing are 5pm - 8pm at Stew Leonard’s, 210 Airport Plaza, Farmingdale, NY 11735. Please note, only Signature Series bottles purchased at this event will be eligible for signatures.

See you there!
