With the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference playoff race tightening, the Islanders took care of business last week, grabbing five of a possible six points. The Islanders went 2-0-1, with a pair of big regulation wins over the Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils. The 1-0 shutout over the Devils on Friday was the most important win of the week, as the Islanders created some separation from their Tri-State rivals. As of Sunday, the Islanders are four points ahead of the Devils with three games in hand. Win those three games and we’re talking about a 10-point gap. The Islanders are also three points ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who occupy the second Wild Card berth in the East. There’s still more work to be done as the Islanders head out on a Western road trip starting Tuesday in Minnesota, but last week was a good start.
GOAL OF THE WEEK: RYAN STROME VS. DETROIT
Ryan Strome takes home this week’s honors, but John Tavares definitely deserves a shoutout for the pass of the week. One word to describe the pass: ridiculous. The captain skates in and throws a behind-the-back pass through two Red Wings right onto Strome’s tape. Strome makes no mistake, beating Jimmy Howard high glove to finish the play. Would like to think the roommates worked on that one with mini-sticks in their spare time.
