The New York Islanders were one goal shy of a three-game sweep at Barclays Center last week, going 2-0-1 and taking five of six points. Brock Nelson recorded his first NHL hat trick against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, the Islanders scored their second win over the New York Rangers this season on Thursday and had a season-high 48 shots in a shootout loss vs. the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. Mix in USA Hockey’s announcement that Jack Capuano will be an assistant coach at the World Cup of Hockey and all in all, pretty good week for the Islanders.
GOAL OF THE WEEK:
Nick Leddy vs. the Rangers
With all due respect to Brock Nelson’s hat trick and Ryan Strome’s absolute snipe on Ryan Miller, did another goal make you as happy as Nick Leddy’s game-winner against the New York Rangers? No. Opponent and context matter here, as you probably don’t live or work with a ton of Blue Jackets fans and it vaulted the Islanders ahead in the standings. Those wins just feel a little bigger than most regular season games.
As for the goal itself, just a fantastic pinch by Leddy. Great heads-up play to recognize he had the time and space to jump into the play. John Tavares spots Leddy coming in off the point and hits him with a great pass from behind the net. Leddy doesn’t waste any time, snapping it past Henrik Lundqvist. That goal wound up making our week. Probably yours too.
Brock Nelson Scores First Hat Trick
Nelson has had a hot stick of late, collecting four goals this week, while taking the team lead in goals (18) in the process. It's all about that release, as Nelson's been able to get his shot off quickly and is beating goalies cleanly. Take a look for yourself. Congratulations Brock. We'd tip our cap if it weren't already on the ice.
