Defenseman sidelined with groin injury suffered during victory over New Jersey on Saturday

Islanders defenseman Bryan Berard will be sidelined approximately 2-4 weeks with a groin injury suffered during the team's 4-3 overtime victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum.

The 30-year old Berard, who was signed to a one-year contract this month after attending training camp as an invitee, has two goals and two assists for four points in five games this season. Both of his goals were game-winners scored on the power play. The Islanders' power play is currently ranked No. 1 in the NHL.

"Bryan has been a big part of our success this season, especially on the power play," said Islanders head coach Ted Nolan. "I'm confident Bryan will do everything in his power to get healthy and back in the lineup soon. The good news is our blue line has a lot of depth, so this is an opportunity for other players to step up."

The Islanders' next game is Saturday night at the Coliseum against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Islanders play just five games, all at home, in the next three weeks.
