Barzal, Ho-Sang, Beauvillier To Play For Jr. Championships

by Michelle Perron / New York Islanders

The New York Islanders are going to be well-represented in the CHL League Finals this season.

Joshua Ho-Sang and the Niagara IceDogs will play for the Ontario Hockey League championship, while Mathew Barzal and the Seattle Thunderbirds will play for the Western Hockey League championship. Anthony Beauvillier and the Shawinigan Cataractes advanced to the Quebec League championship after defeating Saint John on Friday night.

The Thunderbirds will face the Brandon Wheat Kings - Ryan Pulock's junior team - in the WHL Finals, the IceDogs will play the London Knights for the OHL title while the Cataractes will battle the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for the Quebec championship. All three series will start this week, with Beauvillier's Cataractes beginning on Wednesday, Ho-Sang's IceDogs starting Thursday and Barzal's T-Birds dropping the puck on Friday. Since  all three prospects play in different leagues, there is potential for all of them to meet in the Memorial Cup tournament, competing head-to-head for the top prize in Canadian junior hockey. The league champions from the WHL, OHL and QMJHL, plus the host team (this year it’s Red Deer), all meet in a round-robin tournament from May 19-29. Last season, Islanders 2014 first-round pick Michael Dal Colle took home the Memorial Cup.
