At the Skate: Saturday, January 22

by Dyan LeBourdais / New York Islanders
After defeating the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night, the Islanders held their Saturday morning practice at Nassau Coliseum in front of the children and parents participating in the 4th Annual Lighthouse International Youth Hockey Tournament.

The children participating in the tournament took a hiatus between their games to watch the Islanders practice. The 11 and 12-year-olds from the Nassau Islanders, the Rinx and Team China crowded around the glass to watch the practice.

While talking to his teammates, one of the children said, "Oh cool, I've done that drill before."

His teammate replied, "We do a lot of the same drills they do. They just do it at supersonic speed."

Why mess with what's working?
After defeating the Sabres 5-2 on Friday night, the Islanders lines remained the same for Saturday morning's practice:

Defensemen

*Nathan Lawson's injury is being evaluated today. He did not practice.

John Tavares had good things to say about the Islanders goaltending joint effort in last night's 5-2 win over the Sabres.

He said, "It was tough to see Laws (Lawson) go down, but we really wanted to bear down and get the win for both guys. Pouls came great when he came in. We were a little sluggish in the third, but we did what we had to do and it was just nice to get the win for both of those guys."

Nabokov claimed
Shortly after practice, the Islanders announced they claimed Evgeni Nabokov off of waivers from the Detroit Red Wings, ater the veteran goaltender signed a one-year deal on January 20, 2011.

Rakhshani Skates
Wearing a yellow no-contact practice jersey, Rhett Rakhshani made his first practice appearance after suffering a concussion against Vancouver on January 11.
