7 Facts: Pierre Engvall

The New York Islanders added some forward depth on Tuesday afternoon,
acquiring Pierre Engvall from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2024 third round pick
.
The Ljungby, SWE, native was drafted by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round (188th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft - one of five seventh-round picks from that draft to play at least 139 NHL games and one of three to play at least 226.

1. HE PLAYED 3.5 SEASONS WITH THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

Engvall has played 226 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs since debuting in the league in 2019-20. He has 83 points (42G, 41A) over that span. After splitting the 2019-20 season with the Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies, their AHL affiliate, Engvall played the next three seasons entirely in the NHL.
He set career highs in goals (15), assists (20), points (35) and games played (78) last season.

2. HE WON A CALDER CUP

Engvall won an AHL championship Toronto Marlies in 2018. He recorded eight points (3G, 5A) in 20 games en route to the title. Engvall joined the Marlies late in the 2017-18 regular season ahead of the Calder Cup run.
Engvall played a full season with the Marlies in 2018-19, recording 32 points (19G, 31A) in 70 games.

3. HE'S GOT TIES TO THE ISLANDERS MANAGEMENT

Engvall played for Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello when Lamoriello was with the Maple Leafs from 2015-18.
Islanders Goaltending Coach Piero Greco was the Toronto Marlies goalie coach from 2014-18 and was with the team during their run to the Calder Cup in 2018.

4. HE'S A BIG-BODIED WINGER

Engvall is listed at 6'5, 215 lbs., tying him with Ross Johnston and Otto Koivula as the tallest forward on the Islanders roster. Islanders President and General Manager cited Engvall's reach - which is helped by his size - and skating ability as his primary assets, noting that he can play all three forward positions.

5. HE PLAYED IN THE SHL PRIOR TO COMING TO NORTH AMERICA

Engvall played his last year in Europe with HV71 in the SHL, recording 20 points (7G, 13A) in 31 games. While Engvall didn't really cross paths with Simon Holmstrom, who played for HV71's junior team and one game with the big club that season, Engvall was teammates with former Islander David Ullstrom.

6. HE CAME UP IN FROLUNDA AND MORA IK'S SYSTEMS

Engvall spent three years with Frolunda HC from 2012-15 playing in Sweden's junior league, and another two years with Mora IK in HockeyAllsvenskan, the second tier of Swedish hockey. He led Frolunda HC J20 in scoring with 51 points (17G, 34A) in 38 games in 2014-15.

7. HE'S GOT 10 CAREER GAME-WINNING GOALS

Engvall has 10 career game-winning goals, which ranked fifth on Toronto since the start of the 2019-20 season, only behind Toronto's big four of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner and John Tavares.
Of Engvall's 10 game-winners, two of them have come against the Islanders.
