The New York Islanders fell 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday afternoon at UBS Arena.
Brock Nelson scored the Islanders' lone goal. Ilya Sorokin made 18 saves on 20 shots through two periods of play, while Semyon Varlamov took over for the final period and made 12 saves on 14 shots.
Victor Hedman scored on the power play, while Alex Killorn, Ross Colton and Mikhail Sergachev also netted goals for the Lightning, who scored four-unanswered tallies in the win.
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 23 saves on 24 shots and recorded an assist.

"It was a pretty even game, there weren't a lot of chances both ways," Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "Both teams were playing with a lot of bite and a lot of detail and there wasn't much room. I thought they had a little bit of a push, but we were fine in the first eight-or-nine minutes. They got the third goal and honestly it sort of sucked the air out of our bench for a while and they got a few chances and ended up getting the fourth one, but the third goal was the big one. I thought we were okay. They knew that in the third we were going to try to come, and we did for the first eight or nine minutes, they scored their goal about the nine-minute mark and that sort of put a dent in us."

NYI Recap: Nelson scores goal in loss

ISLANDERS LOSE STEAM AFTER SOLID 40 MINUTES OF PLAY

There was no love lost between the Eastern Conference teams.
In their second meeting of the regular season - with both teams in the second leg of a back-to-back set - it was evident this is an emotionally-fused matchup between the two clubs, who have played 13 playoff games in the last two postseasons.
The Islanders took a 1-0 lead and 10-9 shot advantage over Tampa Bay after the chippy first period of play, which featured a scuffle between Matt Martin and Corey Perry as well as a long heavyweight tilt between Ross Johnston and Patrick Maroon 2:32 into the game.

      KINGER'S CALLS
      Nelson's Wicked Wrister
Despite exiting the period on a positive note, the Islanders started slow and were under siege early as the Lightning came out firing and outshot them 6-1 through the first 2:30. The Islanders eventually revved up their own game and began to attack Tampa Bay, where they scored the game's icebreaker on Nelson's wrister in transition at 18:14.
Tampa Bay stormed out with a dominant response in the second period with two goals to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes of play and held an 11-7 shot advantage.
The Lightning entered the middle frame on the power play - and took advantage - after Zdeno Chara took a tripping penalty with 45 seconds left in the first period. Hedman grabbed a pass from Brayden Point at the Islanders blueline and skated into open space. The Swedish defenseman snapped his shot far side of Sorokin at 1:10 to tie the score 1-1.
Tampa Bay kept the momentum going as they doubled their lead 2-1 at 9:47 on a transition play. Anthony Cirelli intercepted a pass at their blueline and jetted up ice exchanging a give-and-go with Killorn. Cirelli threaded his feed for Killorn's tap-in past Sorokin's blocker.
The Islanders had an almost immediate opportunity to tie the score as they earned a power play 10:37, but they couldn't convert. Then, they seemingly tied the score with 14 seconds left in the period as Jean-Gabriel Pageau sprinted up ice after collecting a pass from Kyle Palmieri and went on to beat Vasilevskiy with a backhander, but the Lightning bench immediately - and successfully - challenged for offside on Palmieri when entering the zone. Upon review, the goal was overturned.
"It's unfortunate, that would be a tie game," Pageau said. "We played two solid periods and we're right there."
In the final frame, the Islanders came out with a strong start - as Sorokin did not return and Varlamov replaced him between the pipes - where they outshot the Lightning 4-2 through nine minutes, but Tampa took control with a 14-6 final in shots for the frame.
But Tampa Bay extended its lead 3-1 at 9:10 as they cashed in on a series of rebounds. A point shot from Sergachev created mayhem around the net front as both teams tried to pick up Varlamov's rebounds, but the puck shot back out to Sergachev, who re-fired. Varlamov once again made the stop, but Colton swooped in and lofted his shot over Varlamov's stick.
After the Islanders failed to convert on a late power play opportunity - and finished the game 0-for-3 - at 13:59, the Lightning made it 4-1 shortly after their successful kill. Steven Stamkos occupied the net front as Sergachev sent a shot at Varlamov. The Islanders netminder made the initial stop, but the rebound popped right out to Sergachev where he sent the puck over the goal line with the back of his stick at 16:56.

      NELSON'S SCORING TEAR CONTINUES

Despite losing for the second-straight game, the Islanders' offense has benefited from the dominance and confidence emitted by Nelson as he continues his career-high season.

TBL@NYI: Nelson goes top shelf for goal

Nelson's goal-scoring tear continued as the 30-year-old centerman wired in his team-leading 31st goal of the season - he also leads the team in points with 46 - just one day after he officially eclipsed the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career.
After collecting a chipped puck from Adam Peelch, Nelson charged into Tampa's zone with Anthony Beauvillier skating stride-by-stride with him on the odd-man rush. But Nelson went with his instinct - and hot hand - as he unleashed a blistering wrist shot over Vasilevskiy's glove and under the crossbar at 18:14.
The goal extended Nelson's goal streak to three games where he tallied four goals in that span. He continues his dominance and now leads the NHL for goals in the month of March with 12 as well as leads all skaters in the league in goals since Feb. 17 with 16 in that stretch.

          UPDATE ON SOROKIN

Sorokin made his 43rd start of the season but did not return between the pipes for the final 20 minutes of play. Varlamov replaced him for the final period.
"Just an upper-body injury," Trotz said of Sorokin. "I'll see tomorrow if he'll travel or not. I can't answer that right now."
In the first period, Sorokin was under siege from the get-go against the former Stanley Cup champions as he faced six shots through 2:30 minutes of play. He gloved a look from fellow countryman Kucherov, who fired a wrister from the slot at 1:32, denied Point - with some help from Ryan Pulock's stick work on the backcheck - on a partial breakaway two minutes into the game and gloved a look from his other countryman in Mikhail Sergachev from distance six minutes into the game.
But even in the wake of some promising and abrasive looks by Tampa Bay, Sorokin came through and poised his team to regain their own composure and eventually lead the period 1-0.
Sorokin made five saves on the seven shots he faced in the second period.

          NEXT GAME:
