Islanders to bolster farm system at NHL Entry Draft in Columbus

The 2007 NHL Entry Draft will be held over two days, on Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23, at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, the National Hockey League announced today.

The first round will be conducted Friday night and broadcast live on VERSUS in the United States and TSN and RDS in Canada, beginning at 7 p.m., ET. Rounds two through seven will take place Saturday and start at 10 a.m., ET.

The Islanders will take part in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft after selecting 13 prospects in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft held in Vancouver, including the seventh overall pick, Kyle Okposo. The Minnesota native is currently having a standout rookie season with the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers leading the team in goals and points.

Also selected by the Islanders in 2006 were Finn Jesse Joensuu currently playing in the Finnish Elite League and Swede Robin Figren, who is a rookie for the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League.

The Islanders added more talent to an already excellent group of prospects that include 2005 first-round pick Ryan O'Marra and 2004 picks Petteri Nokelainen and Blake Comeau.

In 2007 for the Columbus NHL Draft, NHL club executives, scouts and coaches will be present on the Entry Draft floor while over 10,000 fans and more than 500 print, television and radio media also are expected. The Draft is expected to attract approximately 3,000 visitors to the city, accounting for 4,500 room nights and approximately $3 million in visitor spending.

A full schedule of events and other details pertaining to the Draft will be announced in the coming months.
