Brad Turnow is a sixth grade science teacher at Center Moriches Middle School in Center Moriches, NY. He talks more about his experience with the EverFi Future Goals programs and his favorite team, the New York Islanders, below!
How long have you been teaching?
20 years!
Why did you decide to become a teacher and what is your favorite part of teaching?
To try and teach children that learning can be fun! The more you put into it, the more you get out of it!

What is your favorite memory as a teacher?
Honestly, each day is my most memorable. I try to make each day the most important teaching day of my career. Every day is a new opportunity to reach a student that does not like school or does not understand why education is so important. I try to capture that one moment each day when a student makes that connection. Overall, seeing former students go on to college and/or become successful in whatever they dreamed or doing is also incredibly memorable.

What is your favorite part of Future Goals & how are you using it in your classroom?
My favorite part is Future Goals - Science - I love the program because most of the students love the program. It is hands-on interactive learning and uses real world challenges and skills. Students see firsthand the cause and effect of what we have learned in class and can carry those skills over to the lessons.
What was your student's reaction to your course?
Overall, very positive! Most love the fact that learning is based around a sport, which they deem as fun! There are a few who find some of the lessons difficult, but if they stick with it and apply what they have learned, they are able to complete it.
Who is your favorite NHL player and why?
That's a tough one… Mathew Barzal stands out the most, but Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas are right there too. All play hard, every second of every shift. Barzal just stands out because of his skill level and stick handling and he will only get better!
If you played hockey, would you rather be the goalie or goal scorer? Why?
I'd rather be a goalie. I would love to be on the net facing slap shots and breakaways! Just to have an NHL player breathing down on you and stopping the puck would be an amazing feeling! Plus you get to play the whole game! (If you are playing well)
How else are you involved in your local community?
I try to involve myself as much as possible. I will always make an attempt to show up to ceremonies, awards nights, games, etc. that my students are involved in. Being there and showing support means a lot. My older son is a Boy Scout and we try to keep involved in community projects...whether is it cleaning up trash in a park or school yard, or recently we helped with a yard cleanup for a soldier in the Army who is serving overseas. I think it is important for your students to see you out and about and trying to make a difference.
