Canadiens' Semin clears waivers, assigned to AHL
Montreal Canadiens forward Alexander Semin cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned to St. John's of the American Hockey League.

Montreal Canadiens forward Alexander Semin cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned to St. John's of the American Hockey League.

Semin, who signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens over the summer after being bought out by the Carolina Hurricanes, had one goal and four points in 15 games. He was scratched from seven straight games from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11 and played fewer than 10 minutes in three of his past five games after returning to the lineup. Semin played 5:22 against the New York Rangers in his most recent game on Nov. 25.

"He has a lot of things to improve in order to play for our team," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said Tuesday.

Semin, 31, scored more than 20 goals in six consecutive seasons with the Washington Capitals from 2006-12, including career highs of 40 goals and 84 points during the 2009-10 season.

Semin had 44 points in 44 games in his first season with the Hurricanes in 2012-13 and signed a five-year contract worth $35 million, according to war-on-ice.com. He had 22 goals and 42 points in 65 games the following season before slipping to six goals and 19 points in 57 games last season.
