Gorton named Rangers GM; Sather remains president
Jeff Gorton on Wednesday was named general manager of the New York Rangers. Jim Schoenfeld was named senior vice president and assistant GM.

Jeff Gorton was named general manager of the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

Gorton, who has spent eight seasons in the Rangers front office, including the past four as assistant general manager, succeeds Glen Sather, who will remain as team president.

"We're going to work together, I don't plan to work as a one-man team," Gorton told BlueshirtsUnited.com. "I think we've had success as a team because of the people here. I'm going to use Glen as much as I can. He's going to be a part of it. To have somebody like Glen in our corner, and to be able to bounce things off of, and talk to what we are thinking, that's obviously a benefit to me and everybody else here."

Sather joined the Rangers organization in 2000 after leading the Edmonton Oilers to five Stanley Cups as coach and/or general manager.

"I just felt that it was time to move a little bit, I mean the clock ticks for everyone," Sather said, according to BlueshirtsUnited.com. "You look at the managers in the NHL, they're all getting younger, they're not getting older. So I think the relationships managers have to have with one another makes it a lot easier for Jeff to be involved than to have me involved.

"Jeff has been an integral part of our success since joining the Rangers, and he has earned the respect of colleagues throughout the hockey community. He is well prepared for and extremely deserving of this opportunity."

Jim Schoenfeld was named senior vice president and assistant GM. He will also be GM of the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers' American Hockey League affiliate.

"Jim has played a pivotal role in several areas during his tenure with the Rangers," Sather said in a statement released by the Rangers. "He is a valuable member of our staff and he will continue to benefit the organization at both the NHL and AHL levels."
