Brian Rolston retires after 17 NHL seasons
Brian Rolston, who won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils as a rookie and went on to play in more than 1,200 games during a 17-season NHL career, retired Tuesday.

Brian Rolston, who won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils as a rookie and went on to play in more than 1,200 games during a 17-season NHL career, retired Tuesday, the NHL Players' Association announced.

Rolston did not play this season, finishing his career in 2011-12 with the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins.

A first-round pick of the Devils in the 1991 NHL Draft, Rolston broke in with the club during the 1994-95 season and was part of New Jersey's first championship team.

He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche during the 1999-2000 season in a deal that saw New Jersey reacquire Claude Lemieux, then Rolston moved to the Boston Bruins later that season in the Ray Bourque trade.

Rolston had multiple stints with the Devils and Bruins, and played three seasons for the Minnesota Wild, for whom he scored a career-high 34 goals during the 2005-06 season.

In 1,256 career regular-season games, Rolston finished with 342 goals and 761 points. He added 20 goals and 34 points in 77 playoff games.

Born in Flint, Mich., he scored seven goals for the United States in the 1994 Olympic Games, the last time amateur players participated.
