Wildcats tie road win record with 5-1 thumping of Saint John

The 2008-09 Moncton Wildcats wrote their name into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League record books this weekend, accomplishing something the Quebec Remparts couldn't.

The Wildcats received goals from five different players en route to a convincing 5-1 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday.

The win gives Moncton (14-0-2-0) eight straight road wins to start the season, tying a 32-year-old record set by the 1976-77 Cornwall Royals. The Remparts failed in their attempt to tie the record on Saturday, losing 2-1 in a shootout against the Rimouski Oceanic.

The Wildcats are still undefeated in regulation and extended their current winning streak to seven games thanks to goals from Randy Cameron, Sasha Famin, Matt Lahey, Daniel Pettersson and Matt Brown. Moncton will attempt to break the record on November 8 in Halifax against the Mooseheads.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Shawinigan 6, Drummondville 3; Acadie-Bathurst 4, Gatineau 2; Cape Breton 10, Baie-Comeau 5; Quebec 7, Lewiston 1; P.E.I. 3, Val-d'Or 2; and Montreal 7, Victoriaville 3.

At Saint John, N.B., Alex Grant had the lone marker for the Sea Dogs (9-7-1-0) near the end of the second period to pull Saint John within one, but the Wildcats responded with three goals in the first half of the third to chase Robert Mayer from the Sea Dogs' net.

Nicola Riopel made 35 saves to earn his 13th win of the season. Mayer stopped 22 shots and Karel St-Laurent made two saves for Saint John.

Cataractes 6, Voltigeurs 3

At Drummondville, Que., Matthew Pistilli scored a hat trick - including the game-winner at 12:42 of the third period - as Shawinigan defeated the Voltigeurs.

Philippe Paradis, Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and Maxime Legault also scored for the Cataractes (13-4-0-0), who won their sixth straight.

Yannick Riendeau scored twice to extend his point streak to 12 games. He now has 100 goals in his QMJHL career. Benoit Levesque had the other goal for Drummondville (12-3-0-2).

Titan 4, Olympiques 2

At Gatineau, Que., Drew Paris had a pair of goals to give Acadie-Bathurst the win over the Olympiques.

Paris scored the winner on the power play midway through the third period. Mathieu Jean-Bouliane and Tomy Joly added goals for the Titan (7-7-4-0).

Hugo Laporte and Alexandre Quesnel replied for Gatineau (5-10-1-1).

Screaming Eagles 10, Drakkar 5

At Sydney, N.S., Joey Haddad scored two goals and added two assists as the Screaming Eagles stormed past Baie-Comeau.

Robert Slaney scored a pair and Chris Culligan added a goal and three assists. Olivier Dame-Malka, Mathieu Brodeur, Nicolas Chouinard, Brett McCarron and Philippe Fontaine also scored for Cape Breton (12-5-0-0).

Gabriel Bourque scored twice, while David Duhamel, Marc-Andre Laroche and Michael Trudel rounded out the scoring for the Drakkar (5-8-2-1).

Remparts 7, Maineiacs 1

At Quebec, Dmitri Kugryshev recorded a hat trick as the Remparts exploded for five goals in the second period to rout Lewiston.

Mikael Tam, Frederick Roy, Mikhail Stefanovich and Benjamin Breault added goals for Quebec (12-2-0-1), who rebounded from two disappointing losses on Friday and Saturday after winning 10 straight.

Michael Chaput had the lone marker for the Maineiacs (6-11-0-0).

Rocket 3, Foreurs 2

At Val-d'Or, Que., Chris Doyle scored the game winner on the power play with less than five minutes remaining in the game as P.E.I. edged the Foreurs.

Ben Duffy and Matthew Lachaine scored second-period goals for the Rocket (7-9-0-1).

Alexandre Monahan and Maxime Sauve combined for two goals in 13 seconds to tie the score for Val-d'Or (1-14-1-1), who was unable to complete the comeback and capture its second win of the season.

Junior 7, Tigres 3

At Montreal, Matt Fillier scored three times in the first period as the Junior jumped out to a 4-1 lead against Victoriaville and never looked back.

Luke Adam and Nick Layton each had a goal and three assists, and Guillaume Asselin and Taylor MacDougall also found the net for Montreal (9-7-0-0).

Brandon Hynes netted a pair and Joel Chouinard scored on the power play in the third period for the Tigres (10-9-0-0).
