Sullivan, Kennedy skating with Pens

When the Pittsburgh Penguins came out for the morning skate today at Consol Energy Center, injured forwards Steve Sullivan and Tyler Kennedy were with them.

Coach Dan Bylsma had told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that Sullivan (lower body) and Kennedy would take part in the morning skate, and would play if they felt up to it. Otherwise, Dustin Jeffrey, recalled from a conditioning assignment with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, would re-enter the lineup.

Sidney Crosby is on the ice, but won't play tonight. Also skating today is forward Eric Tangradi.

Here is what the lines looked like, according to the Penguins' website:

Steve Sullivan - Evgeni Malkin - James Neal
Chris Kunitz - Jordan Staal - Pascal Dupuis
Matt Cooke - Richard Park - Tyler Kennedy
Arron Asham - Joe Vitale - Craig Adams

Pens' Jeffrey recalled from AHL conditioning stint

With Steve Sullivan (lower-body injury) and Tyler Kennedy (concussion) game-time decisions, the Pittsburgh Penguins today have recalled forward Dustin Jeffrey from a conditioning assignment with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scratnon.

Jeffrey is scoreless in six games this season, but he still might be dealing with the effects of March surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right knee.

Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the conditioning assignment was not performance based; rather, it's because Jeffrey needed to get into game situations that weren't available when the Penguins were a fully healthy team.

Isles recall Neiderreiter from conditioning assignment

Nino Niederreiter, the No. 5 pick in the 2010 Entry Draft, will make his season debut for the New York Islanders when they host the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old native of Switzerland has 3 goals and 1 assists in 6 games at Bridgeport of the AHL this season. The winger spent two weeks with the Sound Tigers while on a conditioning stint after suffering a groin injury during training camp.

Islanders coach Jack Capuano said that Niederreiter was playing well enough in camp to make the team before the injury.

Ducks claim Hagman off waivers

The slumping Anaheim Ducks claimed Niklas Hagman off re-entry waivers from the Calgary Flames on Monday.

The move means the Ducks are only responsible for half of Hagman's $3 million salary with the Flames paying the other half.

The Flames sent Hagman to Abbotsford of the AHL on Thursday after the 31-year-old winger had just 1 goal and 3 assists in 8 games. But Hagman was subject to re-entry waivers when the Flames tried to recall him over the weekend, allowing the Ducks to swoop in and grab him at half price.

The Ducks have lost 10 of 12 and could use Hagman on the team's second line with Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu. The three Finns working together could give the team some scoring depth it's sorely lacking right now.

Hagman scored at least 20 goals per season from 2007-10.

Avalanche name Hejduk captain

After deciding against choosing a replacement for the retired Adam Foote to start the season, the Colorado Avalanche named Milan Hejduk the third captain in the team's history  Monday.

The 35-year-old Hejduk and Paul Stastny had been serving as alternate captains. Hejduk will wear the "C" for the first time Tuesday when the Avalanche face the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"Milan is a player who leads by example both on and off the ice," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "He is a product of this organization and won a Stanley Cup with this franchise. He is well-respected among his teammates and we feel he deserves this opportunity and responsibility."

Hejduk, who has served as one of the permanent alternate captains since 2008-09, joins Joe Sakic and Adam Foote as the only captains the Avalanche have ever had. Overall, Hejduk is just the 10th captain in the franchise's 32-year history. The Usti-nad Labem, Czech Republic native joins Peter Stastny as the only European-born captains in franchise history.

"I'm honored to be named Avalanche captain," Hejduk said. "From my rookie season here in Colorado, I have always felt a great sense of pride wearing this sweater and being a part of this organization. I am looking forward to this added responsibility."

Hejduk, who won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2001, ranks third in franchise history in games (927), is fourth in goals (364) and points (769), and fifth in assists (405). He is the franchise's all-time leader in regular-season overtime goals with 9 and his 59 career game-winning tallies rank second behind only Sakic (86). Hejduk sits third in franchise history with 136 power-play goals.

The Florida Panthers are now the only NHL team without a captain.

Sports hernia surgery puts Wolski on shelf

New York Rangers left wing Wojtek Wolski will undergo surgery for a sports hernia Wednesday and is expected to miss about four weeks.

The 25-year-old has been battling groin problems since training camp, but Wolski left the Rangers' game against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday and has not played since.

With just 2 assists in 6 games, it's been a disappointing season for Wolski, who was given the first crack at playing with Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards. Injuries and ineffectiveness forced coach John Tortorella to shuffle Wolski around, and now surgery will keep him on IR.

The procedure will be performed by Dr. William Meyers at Core Performance Physicians in Philadelphia.

Tortorella: Rupp will require arthroscopic surgery

Rangers coach John Tortorella told reporters Friday that forward Mike Rupp will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee next week. A timetable for Rupp's return will be determined after the surgery.

Tortorella also said that Wojtek Wolski, who re-injured his groin in Thursday's 2-1 shootout win over Anaheim, is expected to have an MRI and is definitely out for Saturday's game against Montreal. That means Sean Avery will make his season debut with the Rangers after clearing re-entry waiveres and getting recalled earlier in the week.

Backup goalie Martin Biron missed practice due to a death in the family, but will be back for Saturday's game. Henrik Lundqvist is expected to start against the Canadiens.

Tortorella said there was no further update on the status of Marc Staal (post-concussion symptoms). He reportedly used the word "indefinite" when asked about Staal's health status.

The Rangers could make a subsequent move to replace Wolski on the roster should he be out for an extended period, but they've done nothing as of yet. They also haven't officially announced the signing of defenseman Anton Stralman, who reportedly agreed to a one-year, $900,000 contract on Thursday.

Kovalchuk's status remains uncertain for Saturday

The Devils still don't know the extent of Ilya Kovalchuk's lower-body injury or if he'll be able to play Saturday at home against Winnipeg.

"We're going to evaluate him today and get a report tonight and probably, it'll be more, see how he feels tomorrow morning," Devils coach Pete DeBoer told the reporters in attendance at the Devils optional practice Friday.

Kovalchuk left Thursday's game in Philadelphia late in the third period. He told reporters he thought it was a muscle pull. Kovalchuk did not return for overtime and did not participate in the shootout, though he said he did think about it.

"I tried and it wasn't good at all," Kovalchuk said.

Devils goalie Martin Brodeur confirmed that he will start Saturday against the Jets. Brodeur admitted he felt some soreness in his right shoulder following Wednesday's 5-3 loss to Toronto (his first game since suffering the injury three weeks earlier), but it went away and he felt fine during pre-game warm-ups in Philadelphia.

Johan Hedberg did not practice for the Devils after complaining of back pain following his 4-3 shootout victory Thursday. And defenseman Andy Greene, who sat out Thursday's game with a lower-body injury, will participate in the morning skate Saturday. He'll be re-evaluated afterward.

Devils activate Brodeur from IR

The New Jersey Devils have activated goaltender Martin Brodeur off injured reserve, and have assigned goalie Keith Kinkaid to AHL Lowell.

Brodeur has been out since injuring his shoulder in the first period of a game Oct. 13 against the Los Angeles Kings.

He could be in the net Wednesday, when the Devils host the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In Brodeur's absence, backup Johan Hedberg has gone 3-3-1, but has lost two straight.
