Hello and welcome to a weekly feature on CarolinaHurricanes.com in which I take your Twitter questions about the Carolina Hurricanes or other assorted topics and answer them in mailbag form. Hopefully, the final product is insightful to some degree, and maybe we have some fun along the way.
Let’s get to it.
We’re currently putting some finishing touches on the plans for that week, so stay tuned for an official announcement, which will likely happen sometime in the next week or so.
For those unfamiliar or as a refresher, the Canes’ annual Prospects Development Camp, which brings to Raleigh a collection of draft picks from this year and years past for a week of on- and off-ice training, is bundled under the broader Summerfest umbrella. For the players, it’s a crucial week of learning and training. For the fans, it’s a mid-summer celebration of hockey at PNC Arena, and it’s capped by the Summerfest Celebration, which features discussions with the front office, an autograph session, a scrimmage and much more.
After that, the next “rookie” event will take place in Traverse City, Mich., in mid-September – that’s the annual eight-team NHL Prospects Tournament that the Canes won in 2009.
Not sure! If we don’t have feet on the ground in Toronto, where the tournament will be held from Sept. 17-Oct. 1, we’ll certainly have comprehensive coverage on CarolinaHurricanes.com, as always.
While we’re on the World Cup of Hockey – the May 27 roster deadline is fast approaching. The Hurricanes did not have any players named to the preliminary rosters, but I imagine we might see a name or two pop up on the final rosters when they’re announced. Justin Faulk has to be in the mix on defense for the United States. Do either Elias Lindholm or Victor Rask crack Team Sweden’s roster? What about Sebastian Aho? His meteoric rise this season may earn him a spot on Team Finland. A dark horse to watch would be Jaccob Slavin with Team North America (under 23); his breakout rookie season should at least earn him consideration.
What do you think – who from the Hurricanes will be named to a World Cup roster?
My Make Time Go By Faster 2000 Bot™ is currently on the fritz, so no can do. But! There are some newsworthy tent poles in the near future. We should have the 2016-17 regular season schedule in late June. The team will take 10 picks to Buffalo on June 24-25 to draft the next generation of Hurricanes. Free agency opens on July 1. As mentioned above, Summerfest follows shortly after. Then it will go somewhat quiet again, at least until the NHL Prospects Tournament gets underway, the World Cup of Hockey begins and training camp opens, but the sheer anticipation of all of that should be enough to tide us over.
It’s not October yet, but it will be soon(ish). Just 129 days – but who’s counting?
The third season of “Peaky Blinders” drops on May 31. I will be on Netflix on May 31.
Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, everyone, and join me next week for more questions and more answers!
