Stefan Named Special Assignments Scout

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Greg Stefan has been named as the team’s special assignments scout. Mike Vellucci will take over Stefan’s head coaching duties for the Plymouth Whalers, Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, Jr.’s Ontario Hockey League team.

Stefan, 47, served two-plus seasons on the Hurricanes’ coaching staff as goaltending coach/pro scout prior to taking over as Plymouth’s head coach in December 2007. Stefan served as an assistant coach for the Whalers from 1993 until 1998, and rejoined the organization in 2003 as assistant coach and director of player development where he worked until joining the Hurricanes in 2005.

Vellucci, 42, is the President of Compuware Hockey, which is comprised of the Compuware Arena, the Plymouth Whalers and the Ginopolis On the Ice Restaurant located at Compuware Arena. He served as head coach for the Whalers for six-plus seasons before relinquishing his duties to Stefan in December 2007. The Whalers posted a 246-132-37-22 record with Vellucci as head coach.
