– Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that defenseman Andrej Sekera
underwent abdominal surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. William C. Meyers in Philadelphia, and Sekera’s recovery time is approximately six weeks.
Sekera, 27, leads all Carolina defensemen, and ranks third on the team with 44 points (11g, 33a) this season. The Bojnice, Slovakia, native’s 33 assists rank second on the team, and he leads all Hurricanes skaters in blocked shots (127) and average time on ice per game (23:40). He is in his eighth NHL season and his first with Carolina since being acquired by the Hurricanes in a draft day trade on June 30, 2013. Sekera (6’0”, 201 lbs.) has scored 28 goals and earned 108 assists (136 points) in 413 career NHL regular-season games with Buffalo and Carolina since making his NHL debut in the 2006-07 season. The Carolina chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) named Sekera the Hurricanes’ Most Valuable Player for 2013-14.
