RALEIGH, NC (MAY 31, 2000) – Carolina Hurricanes CEO/General Manager Jim Rutherford and Head Coach Paul Maurice will be addressing local youth hockey coaches this Saturday, June 3, 2000, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Durham. The speeches are part of the USA Hockey Program’s weekend coaches clinic. Rutherford will take the podium at 12 noon. Maurice and Assistant Coach Kevin McCarthy will speak to the coaches at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Maurice surpassed Jack Evans this past season on the Hurricanes’ all-time games coached and all-time wins lists, with 398 and 165, respectively. Born on January 30, 1967, Maurice remains the youngest coach in the National Hockey League despite ranking second among NHL coaches in tenure with the same club, trailing only Detroit’s Scotty Bowman.
Rutherford has been the franchise’s General Manager since 1994. He became the organization’s Chief Executive Officer during the 1999-2000 season. Rutherford also played 13 seasons in the NHL, playing 457 games as a goalie for Pittsburgh, Toronto, Los Angeles and Detroit.
Roughly 150 coaches from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are expected to attend the conference sponsored by USA Hockey, which runs this weekend, from June 2-4, 2000. The Hurricanes will be giving away t-shirts, key chains, and tickets.
