REVIEW: Washington Capitals 2, HURRICANES 1

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Ulf Dahlen scored with 13:38 left to break a tie as the Washington Capitals earned their eighth straight home win, a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes grabbed a 1-0 lead at 12:39 of the first period when Gary Roberts deflected Paul Coffey's shot from the left point through Kolzig's pads. Five of Roberts' 12 goals this season have come on the power play.

Washington broke through in the second period as Jim McKenzie pounded in a rebound during a goalmouth scramble. McKenzie was playing his second game with Washington after being claimed off waivers from Anaheim on January 20. He has four goals this season.

Dahlen had the puck behind the end line when he bumped Paul Ranheim to the ice, skated around the outside edge of the right faceoff circle and sent a wrist shot through traffic that eluded Arturs Irbe on the glove side for his ninth goal.

Irbe said the puck hit Hurricanes defenseman Paul Coffey before finding its way in. "The goal hit his leg," said Irbe, who made 32 saves. "It was an unfortunate situation. I thought I had it for sure. Those types are the toughest to swallow, especially the game-winner."

"In the first period it was an even game but they turned up their jets after that," added Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice, whose team was outshot 17-5 in the second period. "We need to play three periods like the first one. We looked like we were chasing them."

"I don't know if it was a tired group of guys or what the answer is," Roberts said. "Hopefully, if the excuse is that we're tired then maybe the break will help. We've got 28 games left. We have spurts where we move forward and then, like tonight, when we take a step back."
