by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

WASHINGTON - Paul Coffey scored the game-tying goal with 9:14 remaining to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-3 tie with the Washington Capitals.

Ron Francis added a goal and an assist as the Hurricanes extended their unbeaten streak to three games.

Francis collected the puck at the right faceoff circle before feeding Coffey at the top of the slot. The NHL's all-time scoring leader among defenseman fired a wrist shot through goaltender Arturs Irbe's pads for his first tally since January 30.

The Hurricanes were awarded a power play with just over a minute left in overtime when Capitals left wing Steve Konowalchuk was sent off for high-sticking, but Carolina could not convert.

Washington killed off all four of Carolina's power plays and have not allowed a man-advantage goal in 48 straight chances, covering 11 games.

Jeff Halpern and James Black each had a goal and an assist and Richard Zednik scored his third goal in two games for Washington, which concluded their five-game homestand with a 2-1-2 record.

Jeff O'Neill scored his sixth goal of the season for Carolina, which is 1-0-1 this season against Washington.
