REVIEW: HURRICANES 4, Atlanta Thrashers 2

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Sun Dec 19 0:30:02 1999) -- Eric Fichaud stopped all 23 shots he faced in place of Arturs Irbe and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied for a 4-2 victory over the reeling Atlanta Thrashers.

Irbe allowed two goals in a 70-second span of the first period before being pulled in favor of Fichaud, who made just his second appearance in 20 games.

Martin Gelinas and Ron Francis assisted on each other's goals around power-play markers by Gary Roberts and Robert Kron as the Hurricanes scored four straight and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Rookies Dean Sylvester and Patrik Stefan each scored for the expansion Thrashers, who extended their franchise-record losing streak to seven games.

Atlanta got off to a blazing start, but the Hurricanes were able to compose themselves and defeat one of the NHL's worst teams.

Gelinas began the comeback midway through the first period, gathering the puck off a faceoff and rolling a shot up and over goaltender Norm Maracle's back for just his second goal of the season.

Roberts tied it 3:33 into the second period, picking up a rebound of Jeff O'Neill's shot and beating Maracle for his fifth goal.

Kron and Francis scored late in the period as Carolina took control. Kron banged in a rebound of Sean Hill's shot on the power play with 3:14 left for his fourth goal.

Francis' was the prettiest of the game. Gelinas backhanded a pass through the low slot to Francis, who scored his eighth of the season for a 4-2 lead.

Atlanta had a chance to get back in it midway through the third period but failed on a 47-second two-man advantage after Fichaud was called for delay of game.

Francis continued his race with Vancouver's Mark Messier on the all-time assist list, moving into a tie for fourth with his 1,058th on Gelinas' goal.

Paul Coffey also moved closer to a milestone, assisting on Kron's tally for his 1,499th career point.
