REVIEW: HURRICANES 3, BRUINS 1

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes
BOSTON (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes continued their road mastery of the Boston Bruins.

Arturs Irbe made 16 saves as the Hurricanes extended their regular-season unbeaten streak at Boston to seven, beating the Bruins 3-1 Friday.

The Hurricanes are 6-0-1 during that stretch, and the Bruins have now lost three straight home games.

Irbe has allowed eight goals in the last six games, and the Hurricanes are 4-2 during that span.

"This is one of those games, where I was very pleased with my teammates," Irbe said. "I barely broke a sweat, because my teammates didn't give up many chances."

Rookie Shane Willis scored the game-winning goal, converting a pass from Ron Francis with 3:22 left in the second period. Willis leads the Hurricanes with eight goals.

"The goal at the end of the second period was a big one for them," said Bruins forward Bill Guerin. "Our guys are trying to do too much right now and make plays that aren't available."

The Bruins were 0-for-6 on the power play, and Carolina has not allowed a goal on 35 straight penalty-killing opportunities.

"They got an early goal, and instead of putting our heads down and sagging, we got fired up and motivated," said Hurricanes forward Jeff O'Neill.

Said Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice: "Wec played a strong game from start to finish."

Bates Battaglia tied the score 1-1, converting an O'Neill pass from across the crease and beating Peter Skudra at 4:43 of the second.

Carolina previously was 0-6 when trailing after one period.

The Bruins were outshot 11-2 in the second period.

"We have to look for leaders in the locker room," said Bruins coach Mike Keenan. "Until certain players demand a commitment to winning, we won't get off this roller coaster."

O'Neill capped the scoring with his sixth goal of the season at 4:44 of the third period. Rod Brind'Amour had two assists for Carolina.

Game notes
Bruins goaltender Byron Dafoe missed his second straight game with a sore knee, and is listed as day-to-day. ... Carolina defenseman Kevin Hatcher missed his second consecutive game with a broken hand. ... P.J. Axelsson was a healthy scratch for the first time in his career for the Bruins. ... Boston forward Andrei Kovalenko has an NHL worst plus/minus of minus 21. Teammate Thornton and Robert Kron are tied for second with minus 14.
