Carolina 1 1 0--2 NY Rangers 1 2 0--3
NEW YORK -- The surging New York Rangers moved into an unfamiliar place against a familiar opponent, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-2.
Valeri Kamensky recorded a goal and two assists for the Rangers, who have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons but are eighth in the Eastern Conference after winning for the fifth time in six games.
New York avenged a 1-0 loss at Carolina nine days ago. The teams meet again on Thursday to complete a home-and-home series and open the Hurricanes' five-game homestand.
Carolina, which began the night tied for 10th with the Rangers, has lost four straight games for the first time since closing the 1997-98 season with four consecutive defeats.
Kamensky, who has missed 23 games due to an arm injury after signing as a free agent, scored his fourth goal of the season and assisted on tallies by Adam Graves and John MacLean.
Sami Kapanen scored his club-high 17th goal as the Hurricanes closed within 3-2 late in the second period. Bates Battaglia also scored for Carolina. It was his first goal since November 27.
