REVIEW: HURRICANES 2, CALGARY 7

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes
CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Jarome Iginla and Clarke Wilm each scored twice as the Calgary Flames defeated the Carolina Hurricanes to win their second straight after a 2-4-3-3 stretch. "I just think we put together two real good efforts, two character-type efforts, two real gritty performances," coach Don Hay said.

"We, like the majority of teams, can't have three or four guys have real bad nights and expect to win," said coach Paul Maurice, whose team fell to second place in the Southeast Divisin with the loss.

"We got ourselves to the point where we weren't doing a whole lot of anything right," Maurice said.

Sami Kapanen and Jeff O'Neill scored power-play goals for the Hurricanes, who had won five of their previous seven games.

"It obviously wasn't a good night for us but it wasn't necessarily a 7-2 game either," said Carolina's Rod Brind'Amour. "It was one of those nights where everything they put at the net seemed to find a way in, while Mike Vernon played strong for them and made some real big saves early that got their momentum going."

Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe was replaced by Tyler Moss in the first period. Moss stopped 18 of 22 shots he faced. Vernon made 23 saves and is 3-1-1 in his last five starts.
