Arturs Irbe collected 31 saves and Bates Battaglia scored an unassisted goal in the first period to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.

With their fifth win over their last seven games, the Carolina Hurricanes leapfrogged over the Buffalo Sabres for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Irbe, who has established a career high in wins this season with 32, notched his fifth shutout of the season and 24th of his career. In his second season with the team, Irbe ranks tied for second in franchise history with 11 shutouts.
