REVIEW: HURRICANES 1, COLUMBUS 3

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Mike Maneluk scored his first two goals in nearly two years and Marc Denis made 31 saves as the Columbus Blue Jackets handed the Carolina Hurricanes another road loss, 3-1.

The Blue Jackets were on the power play when Maneluk put a rebound of David Vyborny's shot past goaltender Arturs Irbe's stick side for a 2-0 lead at 5:44 of the second period. Maneluk had been held without a goal in six games this season and did not have one in the NHL since tallying for Chicago in a 3-0 victory over Montreal on January 21, 1999.

Maneluk's second goal came 9:38 into the third period. Again taking a feed from Vyborny, he was behind the end line to Irbe's right. He looked to pass across the crease but banked the puck off Irbe's left pad and into the net for a 3-0 lead.

The 27-year-old Maneluk signed as a free agent in July. Last season, he led the American Hockey League with 47 goals but appeared in only one game with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Denis appeared headed toward his fourth career shutout, but Sami Kapanen lifted a wrist shot over the goalie's shoulder from the bottom of the left circle with 3:31 remaining.

Making his second straight start after six appearances by Ron Tugnutt, Denis improved to 3-1-2 in his last six decisions following a 1-8-0 start.

Irbe made 20 saves for Carolina, which fell to 0-5-1-1 in its last seven road games. The Hurricanes were scoreless in four power-play chances and fell to 1-8-1 against Western Conference opponents.
