Review: Carolina 2, Ottawa 1

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH -- Arturs Irbe fell 48 seconds shy of his first shutout of the season, but the Carolina Hurricanes held on for a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Irbe finished with 29 saves, including 17 in the first period, helping Carolina to its first two-game winning streak at the new Raleigh Entertainment & Sports Arena.

The victory came one day after owner Peter Karmonos fired three executives for failed ticket sales, traffic hindrances and other arena problems. Tonight's contest featured the third broken pane of glass in as many games in the building.

Bates Battaglia opened the scoring in the second period, and Robert Kron made it 2-0 on a breakaway with 1:59 left as the Hurricanes handed Eastern Conference-leading Ottawa its fourth loss in 12 games.
