Review: Carolina 1, Dallas 0

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, North Carolina -- Arturs Irbe recorded his 21st career shutout and Paul Ranheim scored 8:39 into the second period as the Carolina Hurricanes extended their unbeaten streak to four games with a 1-0 blanking of the Dallas Stars.

Ranheim received a pass in the slot from Kent Manderville and fired a slap shot past goaltender Ed Belfour. It was Ranheim's first goal since March 26 against Toronto and snapped a six-game losing streak for the Hurricanes-Whalers franchise against Dallas.

The Stars best chance to score came at the end of the second period when Brett Hull tried a wraparound but was stoned by Irbe as time expired. Irbe made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season and Carolina's first in the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena.

Dallas' winless streak reached four games (0-2-2) and the team is still stuck on 999 wins.

The franchise's last shutout against the Stars was when the Hartford Whalers topped the Minnesota North Stars, 5-0, on January 23, 1988.

The Hurricanes improved to 9-1-1 when leading after two periods.
